Wastewater Discharge in Cresco
CRESCO – The city of Cresco reported a wastewater discharge to an unnamed tributary of the Turkey River early this morning.
An automatic alarm system notified the city’s wastewater treatment operator of the discharge at 9:15 p.m. on Monday. An estimated 500 gallons of untreated wastewater flowed into the nearby creek on the southeast side of the Howard County town. The operator’s quick response stopped the bypass within 15 minutes of the alarm’s sounding.
A surge in incoming wastewater occurred about the time the alarm went off. The city and the DNR are continuing to investigate the cause of the release. Elevated levels of rainwater entering the treatment system may be a contributing factor.
The DNR cautions residents to keep children and pets away from the stream for the next 24 hours.
The city will collect water samples for testing.
