About 9 a.m. this morning, the city of Fairfield discovered a wastewater discharge on the east side of town.
The discharge has been tied to a break in a collection line, although the exact location of the rupture is unknown. An unknown amount of untreated wastewater is entering Crow Creek near Chautauqua Park.
City staff is working to locate and repair the break. Staff will collect water samples for testing above and below the discharge area.
The DNR recommends keeping children and pets away from the creek for at least 24 hours after repairs have been completed.
