DES MOINES – The city of Des Moines reported a discharge of untreated wastewater from a sanitary sewer about 2:30 p.m. today.
City crews removed a blockage from the sewer line and stopped the discharge shortly after arriving at the location this afternoon.
An estimated 7,200 gallons of wastewater discharged from the manhole near 2080 King Avenue, reaching a small unnamed stream that flows into the Des Moines River.
City crews limed the area around the manhole cover, but the Iowa DNR encourages residents to keep children and pets away from the area and the stream for at least 24 hours.
The DNR will follow up Thursday evening with an on-site visit and will continue to monitor the area.
