DES MOINES - A 12-inch sewer pipe failed Monday where it crosses a stream on the southeast side of Des Moines.
The ongoing discharge is in a residential neighborhood in the 3000 block of Deep Woods Court. It runs into a tributary of the Des Moines River.
The city staff estimates that up to 105,000 gallons of untreated wastewater had been discharged by about 3:30 p.m. Monday.
A city crew made temporary repairs late Monday afternoon and was continuing to work Monday night to fully stop the discharge. The city plans to make permanent repairs and recover pooled wastewater on Tuesday to minimize impacts on the stream.
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and will be on-site Tuesday.
