DES MOINES - Wastewater operators at opposite ends of the state acted quickly Monday morning to avert wastewater impacts on Iowa streams.
In Allamakee County, the Lansing wastewater treatment plant operator noticed a small pool of wastewater about 8 a.m. He quickly shut off the lift station near 415 S. Front St., preventing any wastewater from reaching a stream. The release was caused by a broken force main. The city is hauling wastewater to the treatment plant while making repairs.
In Union County, a Creston resident reported a wastewater discharge to Hurley Creek about 8 a.m. The city responded quickly, jetting a plugged sewer line to fix the problem. A small amount of wastewater reached Hurley Creek, but the city made repairs and limed the affected area by 8:40 a.m.
