NEWTON - Wastewater was discharging from a private pumping station in Newton on Thursday.
The city wastewater department was notified of the discharge and has verified that it is associated with the Sundance Apartment complex in the 200 block of E. 28th Street N.
An estimated 10 to 15 gallons per minute of untreated wastewater was flowing into a small drainage ditch leading to a tributary of the South Skunk River.
Apparently two failed pumps caused the discharge. The apartment complex manager was able to get one of the pumps working Thursday afternoon.
The DNR cautions people to keep children and pets out of the area for at least 48 hours.
A DNR environmental specialist will continue to monitor the situation and check on repairs.
