Seventeen lakes across Iowa are gearing up to receive trout this fall. MANCHESTER – Saturated soils and heavy rain on Oct. 1 caused moderate flooding at the Manchester Fish Hatchery. Water was about three feet above the tops of the lower raceways and ½ inch from entering the office building.

BONDURANT – A family trout fishing event will be held at Lake Petocka, in Bondurant, at noon on Feb. 10. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will stock 1,400 rainbow trout in the lake. Previously scheduled for Jan. 27, the stocking was postponed due to unsafe ice conditions.

​Things are getting even wilder in northeast Iowa. Watershed projects on northeast Iowa’s famed trout streams over the last two decades have improved water quality, and in turn, wild trout populations, fishing and tourism. By changing the way water comes into trout streams, watershed projects have kept excess sediment, nutrients and bacteria out of the water.

The first day of November looked to be a promising day. I had the morning off to go trout fishing and the weather was cooperating. Like most people, I don’t go fishing nearly often enough so I wanted to share my outing with someone. My husband and kids would all be at work. The grandkids were in school or at the sitter’s. Anglers who purchased the trout permit for the 2016 season may receive a postcard soon encouraging them to participate in the 2016 Trout Angler Survey. As of October 1, 2016, nearly 45,000 resident and non-resident anglers purchased the trout permit, and 10,000 of these purchasers were selected to participate in the trout survey.

Slightly shook up, I stopped fishing and tried to gather myself. I thought, “I just lost the largest trout I have ever hooked in an Iowa stream.” It had to be in the 18- to 20-inch range—a brown trout produced naturally in this stream.
