MONTROSE, IOWA -- At approximately 11:50 PM on November 13, 2021 a train collided with a barge that had been parked along the shore of the Mississippi River near Montrose in Lee County, Iowa. The southbound train operated by BNSF hit the stationary barge, derailing two locomotives and overturning several coal cars between the main line and side track. A new federal law goes into effect on April 1, that requires the operator of a boat with an installed Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) to use the ECOS link while operating on all federally navigable waterways.

DES MOINES – The DNR Air Quality Bureau has the following draft permits up for review. The permits help protect Iowans’ health and the air where we live. DNR’s permitting staff review the applications to ensure facilities comply with state and federal air quality standards. The public has the right and is encouraged to comment on draft permits. The Iowa Department of Transportation is now accepting grant applications for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) grant program for diesel fleets in the state of Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is now accepting grant applications for U. S Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) grant program. This grant program is eligible for diesel fleets in all 99 Iowa counties.

Unusually warm June leads to drought in parts of Iowa

DES MOINES— The unusually warm and mostly dry June promoted the development of moderate drought conditions for parts of the state. However, Iowa continues to have abundant soil moisture reserves, high stream flow and a substantial groundwater supply thanks to a record wet 2015 fall.
