IOWA CITY – Those interested in well safety and groundwater quality should plan to attend the Iowa Groundwater Association’s fall conference Oct. 22 at the Terry Trueblood Center, 4213 Sand Road SE in Iowa City, with local tours on Oct. 21.

Whether your interest is local contamination issues or big-picture policy, the conference lineup will delve into groundwater issues affecting the drinking water, which more than half of Iowa’s residents rely upon.

“We offer reduced registration for students, providing a great opportunity for them to connect with science professionals in Iowa,” says Claire Hruby, IGWA Vice President.  Groundwater professionals, well contractors and water treatment operators can register for continuing education credits.

Early registration closes Oct. 10. See program details and register online now at www.igwa.org

The complete agenda includes Oct. 21 tours of the IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering’s Stanley Hydraulics Lab and the water treatment plant on the University of Iowa campus from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by an informal dinner at the Mill.

On Oct. 22, plan to attend the following talks from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.:

  • PCE contamination near Atlantic’s water supply wells
  • factors affecting public supply well vulnerability from a national perspective
  • benefits of sustainable funding for natural resources in Minnesota
  • history and future of Iowa’s underground storage Tank Fund and programs
  • radionuclides in unconventional drilling waste, following up on a fracking presentation at the spring conference
  • state-of-art groundwater tools (Laser Induced Fluorescence and the Hydraulic Profiling Tool).

Speakers come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and consulting companies.
