Polk City - Roy Penney, 49, of Johnston, pleaded guilty to using a motor vehicle to take deer, wanton waste of game, hunting in a refuge, failure to tag the deer and interference with official acts in Polk County Court on Feb. 17.

According to investigators, Penney was driving through Big Creek State Park when, around 9 a.m., he shot a doe deer using his crossbow. Penney left the park, returning later in the evening to collect the deer when he was stopped by Park Ranger Jeff Poen and State Conservation officers Aron Arthur and Dustin Eighmy. Upon questioning, Penney admitted to shooting the deer with his crossbow.

Penney was fined $1,110 and assessed $1,500 in liquidated damages for the doe deer.  Penney is subject to a two year license suspension in Iowa and 44 states that are part of the Interstate Violator Compact.

The Polk City Police Department and Polk County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the case.
